In 1827, Allan Cunningham led the first expedition of Europeans to travel through the area later to become known as Yangan. Cunningham had trained as a botanical collector under Joseph Banks. Between 1854 and 1866, Canning Downs changed hands often. In 1866, Canning Downs was acquired by Wildash and Hutchinson. However, they were unable to meet stocking rates set by the government and sold off parts of Canning Downs. Patrick Morrissy died suddenly, on 10 October 1872, after collapsing in one of the bottom paddocks from an aneurism. After his death, Michael Morrissy (Patrick Morrissy’s 17 year old child) took over the farm, with the Public Trustee holding control of the farm until Michael Morrissy turned 25 years of age. In 1896, Michael Morrissy married Catherine Doyle and they had eight children: Patrick Morrissy, Ellen Morrissy, James Morrissy, Girlie (Annie) Morrissy who was born on 2 July 1902, Edmond (Eddy) Morrissy, Kathleen Morrissy, Peggy (Margaret) Morrissy who was born on 2 September 1907, and Michael (Mick) Morrissy. In 1931, Eddy Morrissy married Elsie Hart and they had five children: Patricia (Pat) born in 1932, Elaine born in 1933, Michael (Mike), William (Bill) and Edmond (Joe).
The farm was worked by Eddy and Mick Morrissy until Eddy bought Mick’s share in 1942 and Eddy became one of the first milk suppliers in the district when he commenced dairy farming in the same year. After Eddy passed away in 1976, Mike Morrissy stayed on the farm and continued dairy farming until switching to beef cattle farming in later life. Mike Morrissy passed away in December 2013.
In 2014, Kathy and Margaret, children of Pat, bought the house block and Ray, child of Joe, bought the creek road block.
