Animal Welfare
Finally, we treat animal welfare as our paramount consideration when rearing the pigs and when we consign them for slaughter. We ensure that our pigs have the freedom to roam, dig, mate and play therefore reducing stress, injuries and abnormal behaviours that can result from living in confinement with limited stimulation. The pigs live on the land, so they’re free to make their own nests for farrowing and they have shelters that they can shelter in from the elements. In contrast, non-pastured pigs and non-free-range pigs may be locked in sow stalls or farrowing crates. Sow stalls and farrowing crates can cause physical problems for sows. They are unable to exercise so their muscles and bones may deteriorate. Also, they may have great difficulty in standing up or lying down.
